CHAPTER FOURTEEN

"Did you know your sisters are having a gender-reveal party?" I asked Rex.

I'd only come home to change quickly before heading out to rehearsal, and I'd wanted to fill Rex in on what I'd discovered, from Otis to Oxnard. He listened carefully and asked a few questions. I might have left out all the stuff on him threatening me. I'm sure it wasn't important.

"We got an invitation in the mail today." He handed it to me.

The envelope said Rex and Merry Ferguson, with Merry crossed out and the word uninvited written over it. Then another note which looked like Randi had written, said sorry.

"Randi called to say of course you're invited." Rex smiled.

"Hilly's handling the pyrotechnics," I said.

My husband's eyebrows went up. "I might need to chat with my sisters. Those things are getting out of hand. They've started wildfires out west and, the other day, caused two buildings to implode in Bladdersly."

"Hilly blew up the Spanish embassy in Turkmenistan without issue," I added. "Twice. Wait, imploded?"

"One house was painted pink, and the one next door was painted blue," Rex began. "Carnack says they meant to just cause a puff of smoke to come out of the chimney of the blue house, but they used the wrong thing, and both houses blew up from the inside."

"Only in Bladdersly," I mumbled.

Rex looked at his watch. "I'll call Randi in the morning. Hey, don't you need to get going?"

I swore as I looked at the time. "Damn!"

I kissed my husband and ran out the door.
